Have you ever been in a situation where the person you thought was right for something wasn’t? It happened to me recently when I went to vote. While casting my ballot, it made me think about what evangelicals need to do in order to ensure that we get the candidates who are best suited for public office. That’s why I’m writing this article on why evangelicals must return to embracing ‘Truth Matters: Character Counts’ regarding candidates for public office.
It is no coincidence that our country has seen an increase in political unrest and polarization over the last few years. We have become so accustomed to listening solely to one side of any given issue that we’ve forgotten how important character truly is when selecting leaders for our nation. Therefore, if we want to bring unity back into politics, then returning to valuing truth-telling and characters in those running for office is essential.
We’ve Said This For Over 3 Decades (Remember Bill Clinton)
It’s been thirty years since the phrase “character counts” was first coined, and it resonates as loudly today as it did in Bill Clinton’s era. Character still matters when we consider public office candidates – God calls us to look for leaders with integrity, humility and a commitment to truth-telling. We can’t overlook character flaws just because someone has good policies or strong rhetoric; if we do, our society suffers from inevitable moral decay. That is why evangelicals must return to this mantra: truth matters, character counts. It starts with each of us individually understanding what kind of leader we want representing us and holding that standard up even when it means going against popular opinion. Only then will our nation gain true justice and righteousness which leads to peace.
Serial Lying Does Not Imply Trust
As Christians, we must remember that truth matters and character counts when it comes to choosing public office candidates. Serial lying is a sign of broken trustworthiness, and should not be overlooked nor excused in any capacity. If a politician has made it their habit to lie or mislead, they cannot be trusted with the power entrusted to them by voters. We have an obligation to hold our elected officials accountable for their words and actions—if we don’t demand honesty from our leaders, then who will? Furthermore, if decisions are based on falsehoods instead of facts, then how can we expect justice and progress? We must stand up against serial liars in order to protect ourselves and future generations from being misled. Voting wisely means selecting politicians who demonstrate integrity through both word and deed—and rejecting those whose pattern of behavior indicates a lack of such moral fiber.
Character Is Sorely Needed In Politics
It’s all too easy to get caught up in the political games and forget that character still matters. We have a responsibility, as evangelicals, to demand more of our candidates for public office – they must demonstrate integrity and honesty if we are ever to trust them with the power of government. The truth is not just important in politics; it must be paramount. It’s no surprise then that when a politician lies serially, or behaves immorally, their credibility erodes quickly. Character counts – even (and especially) in politics – and when we sacrifice it for short-term gain we miss out on true leadership. Our faith demands we seek leaders who will act honorably; anything less cheapens us all. Let us never settle for less than what God deserves from those whom He has blessed with authority over His people.
Lack Of Truth And Lack Of Character Should Be Disqualifying – But It Doesn’t Mean You Have To Vote For The “Other” Party
Why have we allowed ourselves to be so easily swayed by the false promise of power? With each election, it seems that truth and character matters less and less in our search for a candidate. We’ve become complacent in believing that one party or another can save us from all our problems – but this is simply not true. Character and truth are fundamental components of who we should select for public office; no amount of rhetoric or platform promises can make up for a lack thereof. It’s time to return to what once made America great: people with strong moral values, willing to stand their ground on conviction regardless of popular opinion. Voting does not mean you must choose between two parties alone – there are always other options available if neither aligns with your personal beliefs. Let us remember that any vote cast without regard for integrity and honesty will only further weaken the foundations upon which our democracy rests.
Evangelicals Must Not Be Hypocrites And Compromise Our Values For Political Transactional Gain
As evangelicals, we have a responsibility to stand firm on what we believe is right and true. We cannot compromise our values for political gain; it would make us hypocrites. We must remember that the truth matters and character counts when considering candidates for public office. It’s not enough just to choose someone who agrees with our policy preferences – their personal integrity must also be taken into account. If we put aside moral considerations in favor of short-term advantage, then ultimately we are failing ourselves, our country and God. Our beliefs will only carry weight if they are backed up by consistent action from all of us. As long as there is hope that something can change through voting, let us use wisdom and discernment in making choices about those who lead us. Let’s strive to build a better world together, where truth and character reign supreme!
Conclusion
We must not compromise our values by looking the other way when it comes to public office candidates. We cannot afford to be hypocrites, and we need to remember that character matters in politics. Recently, we have seen some high-profile examples of politicians who are serial liars and lack integrity – from Bill Clinton’s lies about Monica Lewinsky in 1998, to Donald Trump’s statements on a range of topics today. These people should never be trusted with leadership roles because their lack of truth and character is unacceptable for anyone seeking public office.
As evangelicals, let us commit ourselves anew to upholding the principle that ‘truth matters’ and that ‘character counts’ when it comes to choosing leaders for public office. The future of our country depends upon honest men and women who will serve faithfully regardless of party affiliation or personal gain. Let us strive towards this higher goal so that individuals like Bill Clinton or Donald Trump do not become role models!
