Interesting video I came across from Russell Moore. Many Evangelicals mistakenly view America as a “Christian Nation” in the sense that we have a “special covenant” with God and that we will receive the blessings of “American exceptionalism” if we “turn back to God.”
- It is true that, of the the religious people in the US, the majority of those self-identify as Christians.
- It is true that, of our founding fathers, there were a plurality (maybe even a majority) who believed in a Creator – but not necessarily “Jesus Christ” as Evangelicals know him.
- It is NOT true that the verbiage in our founding documents tie the US directly to some form of theocracy with God, nor does it even name Christianity as a preferred religion – much less the state religion.
Too many of us Evangelicals identify with the Republican party too much and with the Jesus of the Bible too little. One key reason is that we believe that American was founded as a “Christian Nation” and that only true Christians are Republicans.
This is completely wrong and I’m calling it out. True Christians are defined by the Bible – not by a political party.
We would do well to remember this!
