It’s been a little over the week since the Parkland, FL high school shooting.
There has been endless debate on what should be done by students, the NRA, political pundits, etc.
Yet, from those who should be shouting the loudest, Evangelical Christians?
Deafening silence.
I did Google searches for “<name of pastor> Parkland shooting”
Not a word from:
- John Piper
- Rick Warren
- Tim Keller
- Charles Stanley
- Albert Mohler
- Chip Ingram
- Francis Chan
- Mark Driscoll
The only person who came up was Billy Graham, whose ministry sent chaplains to Florida to help provide comfort and hope to the families and friends of the 17 victims. What a great man of God, btw, I wanted to have a separate post on him because of all his contributions to the faith and to the faithful over the years but, given a hugely busy week at work this week will simply have this short attribute here to him in his 99 years on Earth).
What does it say about us when we as Reformed Evangelicals care more about endlessly debating whether
- women should teach in a church (besides children)
- alcohol is bad
- sign gifts are here or not
- all types of sex which are prohibited…or not (that would be Mark Driscoll)
- Jesus came to save only the elect or not
- whether the Earth is 6000 years old or billions of years old
- and more very debatable topics that can never be proven or disproven in terms of whether they work
I think it says, “shame on us,” that we have lost the heart of Jesus for people in the here and the now and we only care about eternity.
That was not the way of Jesus…He cared about both.
Time for a reset, Church, a time to wake up and care for people once again!
