The Bible says that God grants sleep to those He loves (Ps 127:2) Yet, why is it that, for many of us, sleep is such a struggle? Does it mean that God doesn’t love us?
Of course not! God’s love is never-failing and always dependable. While we may struggle for whatever reason unbeknownst to us and only known to God, one thing we can be certain is that He loves all His children and nothing will ever change that.
If you struggle to sleep, in addition to prayer, perhaps consider the following tips and see if they might help you:
- Go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time every day
- Get a minimum of 7.5 hours of sleep.
- If you must get less sleep then at least do it in increments of 90 min (1 sleep cycle for most humans)
- Don’t exercise immediately before bedtime.
- Make your room completely (and I mean, “completely!”) dark. Use an eye mask if you struggle.
- Establish a bed-time routine (e.g. take a bath, write an entry in your journal to some soothing music, meditate
- Exercise during the day so that you’ve burned the calories you’ve consumed (and, for some of us, maybe a bit more if we need to lose a few pounds!)
- Try not to drink so much before bedtime such that you don’t have to pee in the middle of the night.
- Eat a bowl of cereal before bed.
- Try some melatonin.
- Practice the art of “letting go” such that you have no cares in the world.
- If you’re a worrier, write down all the things that are on your mind before you go to bed so you know you’ve got it covered.
- Consider utilizing soothing sounds to help you get to sleep (waves, gentle breeze, beach, light rain, etc.)
- Consider an app like Pizz which puts your brain into a delta state which some find helpful.
- Ensure you’re diet has been good for the day…(duh!)
- Express gratitude for the many blessings in your life before going to bed.
- Reflect on actions you chose to take in the day that made you like you made progress on whatever it is you need to make progress on.
- Read a chapter of a book before bed.
- Read a really boring book before bed.
- Don’t tell me if the book that you are reading before bed happens to be the Bible =)
